About page numbers
Every page gets its number set directly in the page content, in a standard Helvetica size that stays legible on screen and on paper. The position choices cover the conventions: bottom-centre for reports, bottom-right for contracts, top-right for manuals, and so on.
The first-number setting matters more than it sounds: numbering a document that continues another one (volume two starting at page 41, an appendix starting at A-1's neighbour) is the difference between a coherent pack and a confusing one. Numbering starts at zero if you want the cover to go uncounted.
The margin setting moves the number away from the trim edge in points (72 points = 1 inch). Printers that cannot print borderless still show the number if you keep it at 24 points or more.
Limits and honest notes
Numbers draw over existing content. If a page already has numbers in the same spot you will get both; pick a different corner, or crop the old ones away first.
Only Latin digits are drawn (the standard font set). Numbering starts from your chosen value on the first page and counts through every page, including covers.
Up to 20 files and 25 MB each per run. Everything runs in this tab; nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering from a page other than the first?
Split or extract the pages you want numbered first, then number them. The first-number option also lets a continued document pick up where the previous one stopped.
Which font is used?
Helvetica, embedded by name in a standard size. It renders in every viewer without shipping a font file.
Can I remove existing page numbers?
No tool can reliably un-draw existing content. Crop the old numbers off with the crop tool, then number freshly.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Numbering runs entirely in your browser.
